About Istanbul Kumkapi
Istanbul Kumkapi is located just inside the sea walls between SultanAhmet, Kadirga and Yenikapi and historical peninsula . In Byzantine times it was a busy harbour with a fleet of fishing boats, and today this old Greek and Armenian neighbourhood is well known for its many fish restaurants that open in the summer at the main square.
It was once known as the Kontoskalion Harbour and built by Emperor Julian, who reigned from 361-363, and for centuries it was renovated, upgraded and repaired and when the Latin’s were evicted in 1261 it was turned into the city’s chief naval base by Emperor Michael VIII Paleologos. As with many other ancient Turkish harbours it was abandoned after silting up and a new harbour was built to serve today’s modern fishing fleet.
It has a busy fish market sitting alongside it offering the freshest fish and you will find a few more fish restaurants here. Although renovations have been made to some of the old wooden houses the area remains rather dilapidated which you will notice as you leave the main square walking towards Nisanca and Yenikapi . In the 17th century Kumkapi became an important area after the Armenian Patriarchate moved from Samatya to here.
